Description

In this lesson, students will practice the receptive skill of reading and the productive skill of speaking. First, T will do an activity to get to know about student's level and to help students feel comfortable in her lesson. Then, in order not to get cold in the text, students will be prepared to it by various activities involving different learning styles. Following this, students will read and understand the information in the article and complete the given activities. In the last part of the lesson, students will practise speaking by doing an interview.

Materials

Abc Student's Book

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about a biography of Lewis Hamilton in the context of sports.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide speaking practice.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Getting to know each other: T draws a star on the whiteboard and writes a year / place / name that is important to her. T tells that students should ask questions to her in order to find out what the information on the whiteboard mean. (I graduated from the university in 2008. I studied in England. My family lives in France. I am the only child. I have dog named Bidik.) Then, T asks sts to tell their names.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T tells students that they will watch a video about extreme sports and asks sts to think of the names of the sports in the video. T plays the video from the following website: http://safeshare.tv/w/tSdPeSjHaU Then Teacher projects three questions and asks Ss to discuss them in pairs. Name as many extreme sports as you can. Which one do you think is the easiest? Which one would you like to try? Why? Teacher writes “sport stars” on the board (PPT - or projects on the screen) and elicits who the students know and like. Then T shows photos of Lewis Hamilton and asks if students know him and what he does. Who is he? What does he do? Why is he famous? Then, T distributes the pieces of papers on which the words (racing, go-kart, trophy, radio-controlled car) are written and tells that students should not show it to their friends. T explains that students will stand up if they think the word on the paper they have is related to the picture that the T shows.

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Sts read the first paragraph to check if they could guess the person correctly. Following this, T tells sts to read the article and match the questions with paragraphs A-G individually. Instruction Checking Question: Will you read on your own or with your friend? (Alone) Will you answer alone or with your friend? (Alone) They check answers in pairs and then T conducts whole class feedback. What music does he like? F (R&B, reggae, hip-hop) When was he born? A (7 January 1985) Who are his heroes? E (his father, Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King) What other hobbies has he got? G (going to the gym, cycling and tennis) How old was he when he discovered car racing? B (6 years old) What did he join when he was 13? C (the McLaren and Mercedes-Benz Young Driver Support Programme) When did he begin Formula 1 racing? D (in 2001)

While-Reading #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

T asks sts to read the article again individually and answer the questions in exercise 4 on page 107 with their partners. T conducts whole class feedback. He won his first British karting championship when he was only ten. He won an amazing four times. He was 23. He can play the guitar.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T asks for a volunteer. T pretends she has a microphone / recorder and tells that she is a reporter and the student is Lewis Hamilton. T explains that she will do an interview with Lewis Hamilton and asks questions about his experiences in the past. T hints that students can use the questions in Exercises 3 and 4 for ideas. The other student will try to remember the information and answer accordingly. A: When were you born? B: I was born on 7 January 1985. A: How old were you when you discovered car racing? B: I was only six. A: What did you join when you were 13? B: ... A: When did you begin Formula One racing? B: I ... A: What did you achieve when you were ten? B: I... A: How many races did you win in your first Formula One session? B: I... A: How old were you when you won the F1 World Championship? B: I... If time, sts will choose their favourite sport star and give their pairs some information about him / her.
