Materials

Abc Course Book

Main Aims

  • To introduce and give practice in using vocabulary related to facilities in a city. To practice reading an article from a web site.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice speaking about facilities in a city.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • Set the context

Teacher greets the Ss. Teacher asks the Ss about the types of transports that they use. Talking about traffic and about life in Istanbul. I will ask about their dislikes about Istanbul, so that I can bring the idea of emigrating to Montreal, Canada. This will prepare for the reading part which will come up in the coming stages.

Vocabulary/ Matching definitions with the words. (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

There are about 15 words on an A4. definitions are separately written on small pieces and put in an envelope. Ss have to find the definitions for the words on the A4. Teacher divides the class into groups. Then gives one sheet to each group. They will have to the matching activity as a group. (Groups of 3-4) Answers are to be checked all together.

Vocabulary/ Putting words into groups (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with a better knowledge of the new vocabulary

There are 4 categories: a. Public transport, b. Nightlife, c. Culture, d. Accommodation . Teacher writes these categories on the board. Teacher assigns one category to each group. Ss continue working in their groups, and find 8 words for the category which is assigned to their group. They can use the words from the previous activity. Once they finish, teacher asks groups to tell the words that they found to the rest of the class. Teacher writes the new words on the board, so the other Ss might copy them.

Pre-Reading (2-5 minutes) • Introduce Ss Montreal

Ss will have discussed about emigrating to another country at the beginning of the class. Teacher brings up moving to another country again, so that Ss can be ready for the reading. Teacher asks Ss about Canada, and tries to elicit some information from Ss. Teacher asks if the Ss know about Canada's official languages, famous places and celebrities from Canada.

Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to see the newly learnt vocab in context

Teacher gives introductions and distributes the HOs. Ss are to read on their own first, and choose where would like to emigrate to. Then, they are to discuss in their group, and come up with one place in Montreal, Canada, because they will live there for a year with their group members. Ss are to provide reasons for their choice and tell them to the rest of the class.

Post-Reading (5-8 minutes) • Checking whether Ss understands the text

Ss still continue in their groups. First, they have to go through the reading again, just a quick look. Then they have to answer some questions about the reading text on their own. At last, they will compare their answers with their friends. The Qs are on a separate HO. Teacher gives instructions, and distributes the HO. Then, all together check the answers.

Extension • Improve Speaking skills about Town facilities

If there is still time, Ss may talk about their hometowns in their groups.
