Description

In this lesson, students will improve their reading skills through skimming a reading text in the context of success and discuss together the areas of life which are the most/ least important for them to succeed in.Following this, two controlled practice to pre-teach them some vocabulary related to the reading text and check their understanding of them before the reading task.Then comes the reading stage in which they are going to read and complete the test about themselves.Following this step will be practicing personal adjectives using pictures and followed by a controlled practice.The last step will be a freer activity about the test results and their opinion about it.

Materials

Abc worksheets/ pictures / power point slides/ white board

Main Aims

  • To provide practice in reading for gist and detail in the context of success.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice vocabulary of personal adjectives in the context of success.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T greets the students. T distributes a puzzle and asks Ss to guess the topic of today's lesson. T gives Ss time to find the word.

pre-reading / Test #1 (2-3 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

T distributes a worksheet in which there are some areas of interests and says," What does success mean to you? Which of these areas are most / least important to you?" T gives students to process the questions alone. T asks Ss to discuss in pairs. T asks them about their interests.

pre- teaching vocab (2-3 minutes) • To test students' knowledge of some vocabulary related to the reading text.

T distributes a worksheet in which Ss are going to match the words wit their definitions T gives Ss time to answer. T asks Ss to check in pairs. T gives written feedback.

Teach # (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the vocabulary parts that the students had difficulty with during the test stage.

T shows Ss pictures of some vocabulary and ask Ss CCQs to check understanding of the meaning . T goes through pronunciation of the words . T writes the words on the board.

Test #2 (2-3 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

T distributes a worksheet in which Ss must use the words in the box to complete the sentences. T gives Ss time to answer. T asks Ss to check in pairs. T gives feedback.

Reading (1-2 minutes) • To skim the text for the main idea.

T asks Ss to read the questions quickly and find which area of interest is the test mainly about. T give Ss time to respond. T asks Ss to check in pairs. T gives feedback.

Reading (5-6 minutes) • To read the questions and answer the test .

Tasks Ss to read the test and answer the questions. T asks Ss to keep notes of their partners' answers. T gives Ss time to discuss their answers. T ask Ss to check the assessment results. T asks Ss to tell her their results.

post-reading (8-10 minutes) • To practice vocabulary of personal adjectives.

T distributes a worksheet in which there is a table of nouns and adjectives. T asks ss to scan the test and the assessment result to find the missing words and place them in the table. T gives Ss time to answer. T goes through the meaning, pronunciation. T asks ss to place the stress on the right syllables. T gives Ss feedback.

Free practice (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T asks students to evaluate the assessment results and say whether they are fair or not. Ss discuss in pairs. SS tell the teacher about their opinion.
