Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with practice in reading for gist and specific information through a reading about adults still living with their parents.-He still lives with his parents.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide Ss with freer speaking practice.
  • To provide clarification and review of common verb phrases about family relationship.

Procedure

Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To arouse interest in the topic, and to introduce common verb phrases.

Show two photos of a family. An old photo with small children and a new one with older parents and their son. Elicit words related to topic.

Vocabulary (5-8 minutes) • Provide visuals to illustrate and elicit personal examples to make sure that Ss become familiar with vocab. in the text

Show Ss matching exercise between words and pictures. Try to show them in sentences.

Initial reading Task (5-8 minutes) • To give Ss practice in reading for gist.

Show students the text. Say we're going to read this story in a minute. Hand out the text. Set a time limit 3-4 minutes. Then hand out initial reading word document and elicit questions: Who is he? What is the problem? Put them in pair/ or group work to discuss the problem. Move around the class and monitor. Nominate for students to get feedback.

Detailed reading (6-8 minutes) • To check Ss' understanding of the text and to provide the opportunity for freer speaking and semi-controlled writing.

Prompt them to read the text second time. Set a time limit maybe 4 minutes. Say we're going to answer questions starting with ...(Nominate for each student for each question.)

Follow-up task (8-10 minutes) • To check Ss's understanding through a fun activity.

Organise the Ss into 2 lines. Call out statements from the text about different characters (Andy, mother and father). Ss take it in turns in their teams to race to the board to write the name(s) of the people in the text. The 1st Student to get the correct answer right for each statement wins a point for their team.
