Description

In this lesson, students learn new function through guided discovery in the context a formal telephone call, the lesson starts with a discussion about have you ever make a formal telephone call. The teacher encourages students to produce TL. Finally, there are some controlled practice and free practice via a final role-play speaking activity.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher asks students have you ever make an interview on a telephone, students have to talk to the teacher and tell him what happened during this telephone call, each student has to participate and tells what happened.

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Teacher asks students to listen to the track and tell him, why is Louisa phoning horizons unlimited? What is the secretary going to do? She is phoning because she has not heard from Marion O'Neill since her interview. the secretary going to pass on the message and ask Marion O'Neill to call back.

Highlighting (4-6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Teacher gets students to guess or remember what the missing phrases might be before playing the the record. Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Teacher asks students to listen to the track and pay attention to intonation to make the questions polite and repeat after it. Teacher asks students to listen to some more telephone phrases then look at the tape script, practice saying all the phrases, paying attention to the intonation.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Teacher introduces the situation and divides them into A and B, Teacher gives instructions that student A is phoning Travel direct to find out about some airline tickets he ordered. Student B work at Travel Direct, Sandi Elliott is on the other line.
