Main Aims

  • To provide practice in reading for gist and detail in the context of success.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice vocabulary of personal adjectives in the context of success.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To generate interest in the topic of the lesson to engage students and set the context

T asks SS questions about their success in life. For example, T asks a couple of SS: "Do you think that you are successful? Can you tell me about a success in your life?". Then T gives SS 2 minutes to discuss activity 1 in HO2. After that, T opens a class feedback.

Pre-teach vocabulary (4-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T gives SS HO1 that contains matching words to definitions. SS work alone for 2 minutes then they check their answers in pairs. T opens a class feedback and makes sure all SS understand the meaning, form, and pronunciation of every lexical item in the exercise. Words like variety and leisure are expected to need drilling.

Reading for gist (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

T tells SS to work individually and look at the psychometric test, read the questions quickly and emphasizes that they don't answer the questions yet. T asks: "what's the questionnaire mainly about? I want you to choose your answer from exercise 1 and chest it for them to clarify then ICQ: "are we going to answer the questions? from where are we going to choose a main idea for the questionnaire? okay you have 2 minutes work alone". Then T monitors and after that he lets SS check in pairs then starts giving feedback.

Reading for details (12-14 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

T tells SS to look at 2b in the same HOs and check these words and phrases definitions in their mini-dictionaries in 2 minutes. Then he asks them to do the test in pairs and take notes of their partner's answers and give a reason for each question answered. T clarifies that if a student is not working, he should imagine how he would react. T lets SS work for 5 minutes then gives them HO4 that contains the test assessment. T asks each student to read a part of the assessment. then ask them which parts of the test were the most/least useful and why.

Follow up (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T gives SS HO5 that contains an activity asking about prepositions used with the TL of the lesson. Then they check in pairs then they get the feedback by going back to the lesson and check if their answers were correct or wrong (in order to practice more of reading which is the main aim).
