Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Conditional Sentence, Type 3 in the context of Robbery

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about No topic in the context of Robbery
  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of Regrets

Procedure

Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To integrate the warm-up to the previous lesson to elicit the model sentence from the reading

The Ss are asked what they can remember from the reading in the previous lesson leading to the questions "Was the bank robbery successful?", "Did everything go according to the plan?", and "Was it a serious robbery?". At this point where the Ss give "no" answer to these questions as a w/c FB, the model sentence "If everything had gone according to the plan, this would have been no joke" can be elicited orally by asking them to imagine, the TL. Possibly getting Ss to take a look at what the judge said individually would be of great help. Then some CCQs like "Did everything go according to the plan?", "Was it a serious robbery?", "Are we talking about past or now"? can be asked to make sure they are almost familiar with the new language as a w/c FB.

Controlled grammar practice (15-17 minutes) • Practicing the meaning and discovering the form of third conditional sentence

The Ss are told that there are still other things in the reading passage that they can imagine to have happened or not have happened. Then they are told that they are going to match the the first half, the HO that is numbered from 1 to 5, with the second half of the sentences, the HO ordered alphabetically from "a" to "e", related to these events. After making sure if the instruction has been clear, two groups of HO's are given out and they are asked to complete this exercise in about 5 minutes. Once the Ss are done, a w/c and w/b FB will be taken accompanied by CCQ. Then the Ss are asked to do choral and individual drill in order to make certain if they can pronounce the contraction form of " 'd bn" and would v bn". Following that, sentence number 3 is selected to be written on the w/b for the sake of form analysis, definitely as a w/c.

Semi-controlled grammar practice (8-10 minutes) • To get Ss practice more freely on the new grammar focus

The title "The thief was arrested when sleeping on the homeowner's bed" is written on the board to elicit some ideas about the story. After a w/c FB, the Ss are told they are going to read about the title they have just talked about. The story HO's are given out and the Ss read it individually. After the w/c FB about the story, they are asked to imagine that the events did not happen and to put the events in the opposite hypothetical order in the group of 3-4. The fist example can be done for a clearer instruction.

Speaking-free (10-12 minutes) • to practice fluency speaking

The Ss are asked to rearrange their seats to form 4 different groups. Then they are asked to choose a number between 1 and 4. They are told that each number refers to a card on which there is a hypothetical situation and each group talk about a different topic. Once they are done, one S from each group give a w/c FB.
