Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of health

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss will see a picture related to health and then in pairs they will learn whether their partners obey these health rules or not.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Some words will be pre-taught through the OHP , and then they will look at a picture of a patient and a doctor and try to guess why he is at the doctor's office.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ss will read some questions on the board and try to understand what they will have to look for while listening to the recording. They will have to share their ides about their answers with a partner before the teacher reveals the answers. Afterward, Ss will receive handouts comprising some short-answer questions to complete. They will listen again and answer the questions as they move forward. Then they will check their answers with a partner. The have to justify their answers then, and in case it is needed, they will be listening to some specific parts.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

They will be required to listen for details to complete some gap-fills. Then they will be asked to peer check before they are called to write the answers on the board to reach an agreement with the help of the teacher.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

They will be given the dialogues of the recording in handouts and required to role-play for about 2 minutes in pairs. Then, they will be selected at random to act it out in front of every one. Then they will be asked to role-play a doctor and 2 patients who are giving and getting advice respectively. But they are supposed to give bad advice instead. In the end, they will be asked to perform it for the whole class and a referee chosen from the students start to be the teacher and giving them a score on a scale of 1 to 10.
