Description

In this lesson, students will read a text about a book and a movie based on it with a different ending from the book. Students need to read and answer some questions to find out the difference between these two endings.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about Books & Movies in the context of Books vs Movies

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Discussion in the context of Books & Movies

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Project a photo onto the board. Ask Ss to see if they like reading books or watching movies. Tell Ss to talk in pairs. Then one or two Ss share what they have heard from their partner(s) to the whole class.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Project Some photos regarding the topic. Elicit some vocabulary items here: cancer, operation, crash, brain-dead. Drill chorally and individually the words as well as a or two sentences. "He is brain-dead after the crash." Then ask Ss to find a connection between the photos and predict what the story is in their pairs. Then random students tell the class what they think. After that give them a handout and ask them to match the words in the box with the definitions individually then check in pairs. Monitor them to see if they have any problems with the questions. Ask an early finisher to write the answers on the board. Next check the answers on the board with the whole class. In the end, project the answers on the board.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading

Project a handout with a question onto the board & show Ss a handout. Ask them to read the whole text quickly to find out the answer to the question "Did the fans like the ending of the book or the film?" Do it individually and then check in pairs. Monitor + note down errors for delay correction. Ask the whole class to answer the question and say where in the text they found the answer.

While-Reading (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading

Ask them to read the whole text again and answer the questions individually and then check in pairs. Monitor + note down errors for delay correction. Ask an early finisher to write the answers on the board. Then check the answers with the whole class. Ask Ss to give reasons for their answers. In the end, project the answers on the board.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Project some questions on the board. Regroup Ss. Ask them to discuss the questions in their groups. Monitor + note down errors for delay correction. In the end, ask random Ss to share what they have talked about to the whole class. Error correction. Drill in case it is needed chorally and individually.
