Description

In this lesson, students practice reading for gist and specific information through guided discovery based on a reading text about The Meaning of Dreams. The lesson starts with a discussion about dreams. This is followed by a reading where students read and answer different types of questions. Finally, there is a free practice via making their own sentences by using the target vocabulary.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan, detailed and deduction reading practice using a text about meaning of dreams

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of dream lexis

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T introduces the topic to the clas: "Everybody dreams........Do you often remember your dreams? Are your dreams funny or scary? Do you know the meaning of your dreams?"

Pre-Reading (1-2 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T hands out the worksheet and gets the ss do exercise 1. Ss have a look at interesting examples and give various answers

While-Reading #1 (2-3 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

First, Ss read the text quickly by themselves to match the names to the details in Exercise 2.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Now, students read the text again carefully. Then, they answer the following questions.

Post-Reading/Listening (15-16 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T writes down the vocabulary on the board and elicit the part of speech through WC feedback. After the clarification of the vocabulary, a volunteer student starts reading paragraph 1 out loud. The answers of the questions are revealed one by one in detail.

Post-Reading #2 (if there's extra time) (5-6 minutes) • freer practise for vocabulary

Ss choose three words from the vocabulary list on the board and make their own sentences. After making the sentences, ss do pair check and read them to the class
