Description

In this lesson, students learn about listening to a conversation about an anniversary and also learn some new vocabularies in this regard. By the end of this lesson, they find how to figure out the gist and specific information in a listening task.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about An Indian wedding in the context of past time

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of wedding and anniversary
  • To provide clarification of wedding and anniversary in the context of past time

Procedure

Pre-listening
Lead in (3-5 minutes) • To activate Ss' texting knowledge of the topic, encourage students to think about content of the text

The teacher enters the class and tells the students : I was looking at my photo albums the other day and I found this ( projecting the picture of me at a wedding party. The teacher asks the students 3 questions : 1- Where was I? 2- Which city/country? 3- Was I sad or happy? WC-FB will be carried out. Monitoring will be done throughout the whole process.

Prediction task (3-5 minutes) • To encourage students to predict and think about the content of the listening

In this stage, the teacher provides students with pieces of the puzzle. Each pair of students will be provided with one piece. They 're supposed to figure out what the whole picture is. When finished, students will stand up and match their pieces to find the complete picture. In the end, the complete picture will be projected on the board.

Pre-Teach Vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To unblock key vocabularies needed to help students complete the task

In this stage, the teacher projects a set of wedding photos and asks the students if they know the meaning. After the elicitation is done, the meaning will be shown. The words are " Wedding, Bride, groom and Wedding Anniversary" Students are supposed to match the words with the pictures. The early finishers will then come to the board to complete the task. Feedback: The answers will be projected.

While listening - Listening for the gist (3-5 minutes) • To encourage students to get the overview of the text

Students will be given the initial part of the listening and will be asked to answer the questions afterward: 1- How many people are talking? 2- What are they talking about? After the students are finished, the pair up with a new partner, and check their answers. WC-FB will be executed.

Listening for the detail (Skimming) (5-7 minutes) • to practice understanding the text in depth

The students will be given the first handout including some questions in each there is only one correct answer. In this stage, students try to listen carefully in order not to lose the track and circle the best answer. After the students are done, they will check their answers whether they have come up with some ideas or not. ICQs: How many answers are correct in each question : (one) Will you do it alone? (yes) Feedback: the answer key will be shown.

Listening for specific information (Scanning) (3-5 minutes) • To practice scanning for specific information

Students are supposed to listen again and answer the questions. Sometimes the short answers are required. After they are done, the students will check their answers in the pair. Then, students will answer the questions randomly through a ball game. Finally, the answer key will be under one students' chair. She/he will read the answers out loud.

Post listening - Freer practice (5-8 minutes) • To provide oral fluency by providing an opportunity to react to the text.

1- Students will be instructed to speak about their personal experience related to the wedding. They will be asked to talk about : - the number of people - the place - their food - their feeling - and time. Finally, they should come up with the most interesting wedding they have been into. 2- After they are done, students will pair up with new partners and report the findings to another partner. ICQ: Are you talking about you or your partner? (our partners) WC-fB will be done. Modeling will be done. Monitoring will be done through the whole procedure.

Correction (3-5 minutes) • To Make students aware of their fossilized errors regarding the theme of the lesson , past of Be

The teacher will take notes of students' mistakes. The mistakes will be written on different pieces of papers. The papers will be given to different groups. Each group will edit other groups' mistakes. In the end, If they are right, the teacher shows the green card, otherwise, the red one will be up.
