Main Aims

  • Helping the students practice skimming in the context of an article about the character types of the postcards.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Introducing the students some new vocabulary and have them practice these vocabulary through some pictures and flashcards, including " definitions and examples."

Procedure

Warm-up / Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • Setting the lesson context and engage the students in the activities.

- The teacher will talk about his past, I mean that about a day in England when his sister sent a postcard to him, including some touching and meaningful words. The teacher will associate that day with the reading part of the lesson.

Pre - Reading Stage (10-15 minutes) • Preparing the students for the text and making it much more understandable for the student through teaching a couple of new vocabulary ( the blocking vocabulary ).

1- The teacher will put some pictures and definitions on the board, including the implied meanings of the blocking vocabulary. 2- Then, the teacher will have the students stand up and have them match the definitions to the appropriate pictures. 3- After checking the matching part with the WC, the teacher will put some examples on the board and will have the students match the definitions to the suitable examples. 4- At the last stage of the pre-reading, the teacher will try to teach the pronunciation of the blocking vocabulary and have the students repeat the pronunciation of the words.

While - Reading (5-10 minutes) • To practice skimming in the context of an article, which has some character types of the post card.

1- The teacher will have the students practice skimming through the text quickly and then will have them associate each article with each of the postcards in the first activity. 2- Then, in the second activity, the students will be given a piece of paper, including some statements taken from the text. In this part of the lesson, the teacher will have the students decide which of the statements are true and which of them are false. 3- In the third activity, the teacher will give the students a piece of paper, including a question about the character types of the postcards.

Post - Reading (8-10 minutes) • Enhancing the receptive skill ( writing ) of the students, having them use the blocking vocabulary to make up their postcards.

1- The teacher will give a piece of paper to each student in the class and have them use the blocking vocabulary in order to have them make up their own postcards. 1- After they have finished making up their postcards, the teacher will have the students share their postcards and the sentences written on each of them with the WC.

Back-Up Activity (3-5 minutes) • To convey the meaning of the blocking vocabulary.

1, As it is known, the back-up stage is used as an extension activity. At this stage, the teacher will have the students work in pairs and discuss what they have learnt in today's lesson...and have them remember the blocking vocabulary.
