Main Aims

  • To clarify and provide controlled practice of must/mustn't/needn't in the context of laws in different states of the US

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about Strange Laws in American Cities
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Making sentences with must/mustn't/needn't in the context of Classroom laws

Procedure

Lead-in (5 minutes) • To present ss with input to talk about the topic

-make the projector ready for presenting engaging pictures -Show some pictures of smoking picture and dog which are forbidden sign in public places -ask students what these signs are -in groups students will talk about in which places they see these signs

Reading Task (10 minutes) • To introduce the target language via text

- ss read the text quickly and choose the best title, p.102,Reading ex 1 -after the gist reading, they read it again and in this time answer detail questions, p.102 ex 2 They answer the questions about which cities or states have : a law about swimming? and some more question with this regard -Student work in pairs to discuss some related questions from the text The teacher monitors carefully to take notes of their errors for delayed feedback

Highlighting target language (10 minutes) • To highlight the target language by use of grammar table

-students will read the rules and meaning of must/mustn't and needn't -I try to have more explanation of the form of the TL -There is more TL on page 110. If I see it is necessary I will give them as HOs

Language Practice (15 minutes) • To provide controlled and less controlled practice of the TL

There are 3 ex to practice the TL -The first one is a controlled practice ss rewrite sentences with replacing you instead of the subj., page 103 -Another controlled practice SS write must/mustn't with a verb from the box - a speaking activity providing freer practice -Ss talk about classroom rules and they say if they are for ss, the T or for both -Ss then make their own sentences with the TL The teacher monitors

Feedback (5 minutes) • To deal with the results of the task

-Ss talk in groups about the last question of the sp activity -they share their opinions with the class -teacher takes notes of any errors -T explains the error from this stage and the previous stages
