Description

In this lesson, ss will improve their reading, listening and speaking skills. They will also focus on some unfamiliar vocabulary. First, they will have a discussion about body language throughout which they will concentrate on the words describing facial expressions and emotions. Then they will skim the passage and do exercises. Next, the students will listen to the recording about people's feelings and match the gestures to the feelings according to the listening exercise. Finally, students will have freer activity during which they will work in pairs and review the vocabulary by making gestures and finding out what feelings they show.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about body language in the context of facial expressions and emotions

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide inference listening practice using a text about body language in the context of facial expressions and feelings
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a body language in the context of facial expressions and feelings

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss are shown the title of a book about body language. They also read the subheading and discuss the statement showing their ideas about it.

Pre-Reading/Listening (7-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The students are shown Dame Helen Mirren's picture based on which they speak about different parts of human face and share their opinions about facial expressions. At this stage, they also focus on some unfamiliar words and find out their meanings according to the context.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ss are provided with text about body language and they skim the passage in order to get its gist. Then they scan the passage to answer to the questions in the exercise 6b and after finishing they discuss and check their answers in pairs.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ss read the relevant sentences in the passage more intensively in order to do exercise 6c where they should find synonyms for the words and phrases. They are provided with card with words and their definitions on, and they do this activity in pairs. After they finish, they are provided with correct answers.

Post-Reading/Listening (15-17 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss are given pictures of people with different facial expressions. They should find out what the people in the pictures feel. They discuss this in pairs and share their opinions. Then the students listen to the recording and check their answers. They can listen to the recording again for more detail and take notes. Next, the student are involved in freer activity as a pair work throughout which they make different gestures to each other and find out what these gestures mean.
