Description

In this lesson, students will learn how to ask & answer about the weather in the past, present & future using adjectives regarding different types of weather.

Materials

Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about The weather in the context of The weather

Procedure

Lead in (1-2 minutes) • To generate interest in the topic

Project photos onto the board Ask Ss what the pictures show

Set up (4-5 minutes) • To highlight the target language to be used in the activity

Write R, Fg, S, C, Sn on the board. Ask Ss to guess what the letters mean in pairs. Give them a hint by showing them the weather Symbols on a handout. Ask Ss to write an adjective from the box under each symbol individually then check them in pairs. Monitor + Ask an early finisher to write the complete form of the letters on the board. Check the answers of the handout with the whole class. Drill a sentence "It's stormy/ snowy/ sunny".

Controlled practice (7-9 minutes) • Focused on meaning

Project the handout onto the board. Elicit "temparature" "degree" +CCQs. Ask Ss to match the words and pictures in pairs. Check the answers with the whole class. Ask Ss to match the words on the handout with the ones on the board to make some sentences in groups. Model on or two + Monitor + note down possible errors. Ask early finishers to check with other groups. Check with some Ss then get them the answers. Drill one or two sentences " It's hot and sunny." "It's cool and rainy."

Controlled practice (7-8 minutes) • Focused on meaning

Project the handout onto the board. Elicit "Weather forecast" + CCQs Ask Ss to listen, write the temperatures on the map & which season it is individually Monitor + play again. Ss check with peers. Ask one student to read the answers to the whole. Drill a sentence chorally & individually "it's going to be cloudy and showery (across much of Italy.)"

Controlled practice (8-9 minutes) • Focused on form

Elicit the question to ask about the weather and write on the board. Highlight "What............like?" asks for a description. "What's the weather like?" Drill the questions using a timeline. Give Ss the handout, listen to the conversation and complete it, check in pairs. Monitor + play again if needed Ask Ss to practice the conversation in pairs. Ask Ss to practice it about the weather where they are for yesterday, today and tomorrow. Monitor + note down

Freer practice (8-9 minutes) • Talking about weather

Show Ss the handouts, tell Ss they ask and answer about the weather tomorrow. Give a demo with a student. Divide Ss into As & Bs & ask them to sit back to back. Give them different handouts. Ask students to find the hottest & the coldest cities and which month it is. Monitor + note down possible errors. Asks early finishers to write the answers on the board then check with the whole class.

Error correction (2-3 minutes) • Delayed correction

Write the errors on the board. Ask Ss to find the problem(s) in pairs and correct them. Check with the whole class. Drill them chorally and individually.
