Description

In this lesson, the students will be engaged in the topic by some pictures regarding the lives of astronauts.At first, they will be grouped to talk about their daily lives and then they will be required to imagine they are living in space.They will talk for a while then they'll have a reading passage to work on.A jig-saw exercise followed by an intensive reading exercise as well as free speaking will bring the process to an end.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about space in the context of living in space

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of living in space

Procedure

Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • to activate Ss' existing knowledge of the topic;to encourage Ss to think about content of the text; To develop oral fluency

The teacher will have the students to talk about their daily activities in pairs for 1 to 2 minutes.Then they will be asked to close their eyes to imagine they are in space.The teacher will describe the scene and wake them up later so that they can talk to their partners about it.This will take about 3 to 4 minutes.

pre-teach (5-6 minutes) • Pre-teach blocking words and let them in the context

Having them look at the some sentences on the board and requiring them to match the words in their handouts with each sentence in 2 minutes. Then they will voluntarily come to the board and write the answers.Then the answers are going to be revealed through OHP.

While-reading (6-7 minutes) • to encourage Ss to obtain an overall view of what the text is about

They will go around the class to take a look at some sentences in every paragraph and a will be required to match them with a heading in their hand-outs.A minute will be allocated for peer checking.This should be completed within 2 to 3 minutes.And they will be asked to justify their answers before the answers are shown on the board.

post-reading (6-8 minutes) • to practice reading in details

Ss will look at the board where some questions start to appear and they will need to decide whether they are true or false in their pairs. There will be no handouts,therefore, they will be required to locate the answers in the text and underline and number it. Eventually, the teacher will stand in front of the board with one check mark and a cross mark on the left side and right side,respectively shown on the board.If the answer is right the teacher will step to the right.if it's wrong he moves to the left.

CONTROLLED PRACTICE (6-8 minutes) • to make use of TL but with control

Ss will have to compose 4 questions from the reading section to ask their partners in groups of three.They'll be given 2 minutes to come up with the questions and 4 minutes of speaking. Then 2 groups will be chosen,at random,to report it to the teacher.

FREER PRACTICE (6-8 minutes) • to personalize the TL

Ss will be required to work in pairs to speak about the questions on the board to feel free and utilize the TL in real life.and then they will switch their partners to report it to each other.
