Description

In this lesson, the students are going to practice speaking in the context of food and drink. They are also going to have listening for specific information related to the context. A new vocabulary will be elicited in order to show them the context.

  • To provide listening for gist and specific information in the context of food and drink.

Procedure

Lead-in/Set context (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students and elicit the new vocabulary

Get to know the new students. 1- Set up the context: ask ss if they know how to cook/what they can cook. 2- Start eliciting. a) Show them a picture of the brigadeiro. b) words: ingredients, a dish, to stir, junk food, to pour, to get/be thick, tablespoon, sprinkle, mixture. Showing pictures, realia and doing mimics.

Speaking/Pre-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

1- Set up the speaking activity (what did you eat yesterday?) by showing them and example on the board with useful words: I had, I ate, some, an, a. 2- Let them make notes and then tell each other what they ate. 3- Prepare the students for the listening (instructions, demo).

Listening for specific information/gist (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

1- Ask them if they can make spaghetti bolognese. What do they need to make it? 2- After giving the instructions listening, play the audio once and ask then to check in pairs. 3- Play the audio again if necessary (monitor to make sure). 4- Feedback on the board. Gist: 1- Give them a reason to listen again: if Belinda liked Collin's spaghetti bolognese or not. 2- Play again. Feedback.

Post-Listening (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

1- Set up the second speaking activity. 2- Give instructions and demo (brigadeiro's recipe). 3- Give them time to make notes about a famous dish from their country. What ingredients they need. 4- Let them speak to each other. FEEDBACK now or next stage?
