Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of the net.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Teacher shows the WC a slide including two photos of the net. - Teacher asks this question: " what do you do on the net?" -He writes some of the ideas on the board. -Then, ask Ss to discuss this question in pairs. -Finally, get some Ss to talk about their answers.

Pre-Listening (5 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening and make it accessible

-Teacher gives clear instruction about this activity. -He points at the ideas and asks Ss to say whether the ideas are true or false. -When Ss receive the HO they talk about the ideas in pairs. -Teacher monitors them and gives a hand if necessary. -Then, he gets feedback and listens to some Ss.

While-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist.

-Teacher writes this question on the board before he plays the recording: " what do you think these people are talking about?". -Ss must answer this question on their own, so the teacher needs to ask some ICQs like ; do you do it in pairs or alone? (alone) -Then, teacher plays the recording and asks Ss to listen very carefully to it. -After that, he puts the Ss in pairs and asks them to discuss their answers together. -Finally, teacher gets feedback from the WC.

While-Listening #2 (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

-Teacher shows the WC HO 3 and gives them clear instruction. -Ss are asked to read the questions beforehand and listen to the recording to find more details. -While listening, teacher monitors Ss to see how many questions they can answer. It can be a kind of feedback. -After that, they check in pairs and justify their reasons. -As the final step, teacher checks with the WC and asks for reasons if that's a challenging question.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the context and expand on what they've learned

-Teacher shows Ss HO 4 and gives his instructions. -He asks Ss to use some of the words they've already learned in their answers. -Then,he gives them the new handout. -Ss are asked to talk about the questions in pairs and bring reasons if necessary. -Teacher, finally, gets some students talk about their answers.
