Description

In this lesson, students will learn grammar structures 'used to', 'be used to' and 'get used to'. They will focus on their use in the sentences and correct pronunciation. Students will achieve this throughout listening exercise, discussion, controlled and semi-controlled practice which will end up discussion and pair work (freer practice).

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of grammar structures 'used to', 'be used to', 'get used to' in the context of sleep

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of sleep
  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about problems and their reasons in the context of sleep

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss are shown a quote and the name of the person who said it. Then they are asked question whether they have problems with sleeping. After a short open class discussion students are given cards with different questions about sleep and they answer to them in pairs.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ss listen to the recording about 3 people with problems sleeping. They take notes about who has which problems and also mention the reasons for the problems in their notes. Then the students compare their notes as pairs. They listen to the recording again in order to check and complete their task.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Ask some question to the students about the context of listening to elicit the new grammar structures.

Clarification (5-7 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Write the new structures on the W/B, elicit formula and work on pronunciation. Encourage the students to show other examples.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss do ex b on page 143. They fill the gaps with 'use to', 'be used to' and 'get use to' and verbs in brackets. Then they write the answers on the W/B and discuss.

Semi-Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ss do exercise about the new grammar structure. They read the given sentences, focus on the accuracy of them and find out which is correct , which is wrong. Then they compare their answers with each other in pairs. After this ss are provided with correct answers to check theirs answers.

Free Practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students work in pairs and answer to the questions about sleep using the new structures.
