in this lesson, students will learn new vocabulary and will have a speaking and a reading task in the context of music.

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about what music would you play to an alien? in the context of music

  • To provide clarification of musical instruments, musicians in the context of music

Procedure

1. lead-in (3-5 minutes) • set a context to activate students' schemata and encourage them to the topic

teacher plays/show some very short pieces of music or songs (classic, pop, etc.) then teacher asks the students -What was a song or piece of music that you remember hearing and liking when you were a child? -Where did you first hear it? -How old were you? -Why did you like it?

2. vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • to introduce new vocabulary about musical instruments and musicians

students will hear some instruments and musicians to match with the words

3. Skimming (3-5 minutes) • to skim the reading text by looking at the title and answering the question

teacher will give the students the reading text and ask them to read the title and answer the question -why did the writer choose this article? students have three minutes to do the task. ICQs: Are you going to read the text with partners? no, Are you going to the text alone? yes

4. scanning (5-7 minutes) • scan the the reading to find meaning of the given words or phrases

teacher gives the students some words or phrases and asks the students to scan the reading and find their meanings. they will do the task alone then they can check their answers with partners. finally, teacher gives them the answers. ICQs: Are you going to work with partners? no Are you going to work alone? yes

5. inference (2-3 minutes) • to infer meaning of the given words from the reading text

teacher gives the students three words (whir, hum, clacking) to guess their meaning from the context. they can work with partners. CCQs: Are you going to work alone? no Are you going to work with a partner? yes

6. detailed (5-7 minutes) • to go through the article for details of why the article mentions the pieces of music or artists

teacher gives sentences about the pieces of music or artists and asks them to find the reason for each sentence why they are mentioned in the reading text. students can work with a partner to do the task. after the task teacher will give the answers. ICQs: Are you going to work alone? no Are you going to work in pairs? yes

7. speaking (7-10 minutes) • a personalized speaking in pairs about music

teacher gives the students some questions to talk with partners about music to personalize the following questions: - do you have a favorite ....? - do you play a musical instrument? - have you ever ...? - concert?
