Main Aims

  • To give the students an opportunity to practice using the Present Simple orally

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice speaking by using the Present Simple

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To activate background schemata

The teacher asks the students to work in pairs. The teacher projects the three questions on to the WB and asks one of the students to read those questions aloud. "What is your job?" "Do you work at the weekend?" "When do you go to work or school?" The teacher gives the students one minute to discuss their questions. The teacher asks a few of the studens the questions on the WB and gives feedback.

Controlled Oral Practice (10-12 minutes) • To practice speaking by using the Present Simple Tense

The teacher asks the students to work in pairs and gives them two questions to ask their partners. "What is your best friend's name?" and "How old is s/he?" The teacher gives out handouts (Activity 9, b. Face to Face, Second Edition, Cambridge University Press, Pp. 41) and asks the students to write five questions to get information about their partner's best friend. They ask those questions to their partner. The students can write the topics from the box (the first handout) or the students can use their own words. Before the students start, the teacher models to make the instructions clear to the students. She asks one of the good students T:"What is your best friend's name?" Student:"X" T:"Where does she work? The teacher drills how the intonation falls when they ask Wh questions. The teacher asks students to repeat after her. The teacher gives the students five minutes to write their questions After they are done, they ask their individual partners all their questions and get the answers. Then they swap roles and the other student asks all his/her questions and gets the information. The teacher asks a few of the students to read one of the questons that they have written and the answers. If the students have made mistakes, the teacher asks the whole class where the problem is in that sentences instead of giving the correct answer directly. If they cannot find it, the teacher helps them to correct the sentence.

Less Controlled Speaking Practice (12-15 minutes) • To practice speaking in an enjoyable way

(Five Star Game) The teacher draws one star on the WB and writes her mother's name in the middle and writes five words in each corner of the star such as "a hospital, dogs, iskender, Turkmenistan and play basketball" The students ask" Yes/No" questions to get the information about the teacher's mother. When the students ask questions such as 'Does your mother work at a hospital?" the teacher checks their intonation. The teacher drills and highlights how to ask "Yes/No" questions on the WB and asks the students to repeat after her. The students have to use the Present Simple tense, while they are asking questons. After they are done, the teacher asks the students to work in pairs and she asks the students to draw their own star and write the name of one of their siblings, their parents, their wife or their husband in the middle. One student in each pair starts asking "Yes/No" questions to his/her partner until he/she finds the correct information about the person. When he/she is finished, they swap roles. After they are done, the students report what they learnt from their partners. The teacher takes some notes about any problems while the ss are reporting what they have learnt. The teacher highlights any mistakes on the white board; she first asks the whole class to correct the problem to give them time to think where they made mistakes. If they cannot find their mistake the teacher gives them two options, so the students can choose the correct one easily.

Freer Oral Practice (8-10 minutes) • To encourage the students to practice the Present Simple orally

(Activity: Find someone who... ) The teacher gives out handouts (Teacher Made Chart). In the chart, there are prompts about daily routines and habits. The teacher asks the students to stand up and mingle. She also asks the students to talk with four different people who have different daily routines and habits. Before they start to do the activity, the teacher makes sure that the ss will not ask all the questions to the same person. The teacher also makes sure that they do not ask short questions like "drink juice?" The ss have to ask full questions and give full answers. The students share what they find very interesting about their classmates. The teacher gives delayed feedback at the end of the activity.
