Description

In this lesson, Ss will practice listening for gist and details in the context of future career. I will ask the Ss questions about ways of getting a job and starting a career to set the context. Then, setting the context of the listening activity. After that, Ss will be given a vocabulary test in which they should match the phrases to their definitions. Next, Ss will listen to 6 students talking about their studies and future plans. Ss will listen for gist and details and finally Ss will have a speaking activity in which they will practice phrases in the context of future career

Procedure

Lead in (2-3 minutes) • To generate interest in the topic of the lesson

I will start the lesson by asking the Ss some questions about starting a career. For example, Is it easy to find a job in Egypt after graduation? what should you do to find a suitable job? what are your plans about your future career?

Set the context (2-3 minutes) • To generate interest in the topic of the listening activity

I will set the context of the listening activity to the Ss. They will listen to 6 graduates talking about what they have been studying and about their career future plans.

Pre-teach vocabulary (5-7 minutes) • To prevent Ls blocking on unknown vocabulary in the questions or answers

Pre-teach the following vocabulary: to do a temporary job /təˈdu:əˈtem.pər.ər.i dʒɒb/ to do a master's degree /təˈdu:əˌmɑː.stəz dɪˈɡriː/ to apply for a job /təˈplaɪfədʒɒb/ I will follow the ECDW order.

Gist task (4-5 minutes) • To give Ls a reason to listen at a general level

Ss will be asked to listen to six students and make a note of what they have been studying and their plans/ideas about their future career. After that, Ss will check their answers in pairs, followed by my feedback.

Detailed task (10-13 minutes) • To give Ls a reason to listen at a detailed level

Ss have to listen and complete the missing information about the 6 graduates. Then, they will check their answers in pairs. After that, they will be given the answer key.

Follow up 1 (5-7 minutes) • To give Ls the chance to respond to the listening task. To balance productive and receptive skills

Ss will be divided into two groups. They have to figure out which of the 6 students have already made arrangements to start a job/course, who already knows what they want to do and who doesn't really know what they want to do.

Follow up2 (5-7 minutes) • To give Ls the chance to respond to the listening activity. To balance productive and receptive skills.

Ss will be asked to talk about their studies and their plans for their future career. They will prepare their ideas in a minute and then will be asked to discuss them in pairs. This will be followed by a group discussion. i will give them content feedback.
