Description

In this lesson students will be introduced to the concept of compound nouns through listening to an interview with a dictionary writer Students will be also introduced to the the topic of new language.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, detailed and specific information listening practice using a text about an interview with dictionary writer in the context of nature and the origin of new words in the English language

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of compound nouns and new words in English language in the context of the nature and the origin of new words in the English language
  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about Brave New world in the context of the nature and the origin of new words in the English language

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T draws an ice cream on the Board and write up the word. -T elicits the word 'compound noun'. - T shows pics of a list of compound nouns on the Projector, e.g. tea bag , tea spoon ,soap dish, face cloth , wedding ring , pencil case, ..etc -Sts work in pairs to list the compounds. -Check open class at the end

Pre-Listening (5-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-T asks Sts to look at the book cover and guess what the book is about. -T asks the Sts to read the introduction quickly to find out more. -T elicits what the book is about. -T checks Sts understanding of the word 'abbreviations' by writing DR. MR. on the board and ask them what does it stand for. -T writes sofa and bed separately and elicit the word sofa-bed from them. -T asks the Sts what did we do ? Sts say combine, and introduce 'combined words'

While Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information /listening tasks

- T Tells Sts that they are going to listen to an interview with the author Kerry Maxwell. -T asks students to quickly read the authors profile. -T Tells Sts the before listening they have to read the list of topics. - T tells Sts to number the topics in the oreder they hear them. - T plays the recordings 2.73. -Sts check their answers in pairs.

While Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

- T tells Sts in pairs they try to work out which categories the words in exercise 3 might fall into from exercise 2. - T tells Sts that they are going to listen. - T play the recordings again. - Sts checks their answers in pairs. -whole class FB

Post Listening (10-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-T chest HOs. -T tells Sts to look at the Pics and read their caption. -T asks Sts if they use those words in their language. -T elicits the word class of the three words eg. google (v) carbon foot print (n), sudoku(n) -T asks the Sts to find words' definitions . -T tells Sts that now they have to work in pairs and ask and answer the four question that is in the bottom of the sheet.
