Main Aims

  • To provide practice in reading for gist and detail in the context of success.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice vocabulary of personal adjectives in the context of success.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T writes the word 'success' on the WB and asks the SS ' What is the first thing that comes in your mind when you see this word'? T elicits the SS answers .

Set context (4 minutes) • To generate interests in the topic of the text.

T asks the SS' Which of these are the most/least important'? - e.g. a good life, a nice home, friends and fun, etc...... T elicits the SS answers.

Pre- teach vocabulary (7 minutes) • To prevent Ls blocking on unknown vocabulary in the questions or answers.

T demonstrates the task, T tells the SS that they are going to match the words and phrases with the correct definition. T divides the SS to two groups, T gives the hand-outs and sets time, then the SS start to work with each other. T provides answer keys as feedback to the SS after they finish.

Gist task (5 minutes) • To give Ls a reason to read at a general level.

T tells the SS that they need to look at the'psychometric test' ( a test designed to assess your personality) and read the questions quickly to answer this question' Which of the areas in exercise 1 is the questionnaire mainly about? a successful career After that the SS check their answers in pairs or groups. T elicit the answers, and provides the answer keys as a feedback.

Detailed task (10 minutes) • To give Ls a reason to read/ listen at a detailed level.

T demonstrates the task by giving clear instructions. The T sets time for the task not more 10 minutes,The SS work in pairs and do the test by asking and answering the questions, each student keep a note about his/her friend. The SS will imagine they have a job and react based on that. SS will give reasons for their answers. T elicits some of the SS answers.

Follow up (10 minutes) • To give Ls the chance to respond to the text.

T tells the SS that they will look at page 140 and work out their partner's score. Then they will read the assessment together. After that the SS will discuss the following questions: - Do you think your assessment is fair? - Do you think this is a good test to assess personality? - Which are the most/least useful questions? Why? After that they will complete the table with words from the test and assessment on page 140.
