Daily Routine - Present Simple

Description

In this lesson students learn about present simple tense, third person singular (He, She, It) via guided discovery in the context of daily routines. The lesson starts with a short clip about a boy's daily routines. Later, the form of the present simple will be deducted from a passage about Carol's typical day.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Present simple (third person singular, She, he, it) in the context of Daily routines

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of Daily routines and typical days
  • To provide deduction reading practice using a text about Carol's typical day in the context of Daily routines.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context about daily routines and engage students

The teacher enters the class while holding a newspaper in her hands. The teacher asks them if they know what it is. Later she tells them that she reads newspaper every day, as one of her routine activity. Then, the teacher asks the students to watch a short clip about a man's daily routine, and answer the question projected: Does he have a good routine| Talk about 2 of his routine activities. After watching the clip, the teacher asks ICQ : Are you going to work with your partner| (yes) Feedback: Ask one or two students to provide their answers and give reasons.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text about Carol's typical day and activate the passive verbs that they have already learnt.

In this stage, the students will be given Handout 1 about Carols Daily routine which is coming with a picture according to the order of the routine. The students are supposed to fill the blanks according to the pictures in pairs and pay attention to the times given. The teacher asks the students: Does she have a busy routine? what does she do? ICQ: Are you going to do it alone? ( No) Modeling: The teacher projects the first 2 pictures and does the first and second blank. Feedback: WC FB Monitoring will be done through the whole stage.

Highlighting the Target Language (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language through guided discovery

The teacher projects the rest of the pictures and asks the students : T: What does Carol do at 7? ( She gets up at 7 o' clock.) By modeling one sentence, The Students will be guided through the rest of the pictures(handout 1) and come up with the complete sentences in the third person singular form.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

1- Meaning : The teacher asks the students, according to the picture : Does Carol Go to work every day? (yes) Does she always have lunch? (yes) Does she watch TV? (no) 2- Form After eliciting one positive and one negative response, the teacher asks the students to look at handout 1 again, fill the chart and put the positive and negative sentences in the right place. The answer key will be projected afterward. The students will do this part with the pair. Substitution Drilling : Students will be asked to replace the subject with "he" or" My father" or " My mother". 3- Pronunciation The teacher draws the students' attention to the verb endings (S/ES) and will ask them whether they can find the differences between the sounds. Later, the teacher asks the students to complete the chart for the three different sounds (/s/ /z/ /iz/ ) CCQ: Do all verbs get S? (no) Do all verbs get s/es? (No )for example have >> has The answer key will be projected afterward.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students are given a text about Carol's brother daily routine. They are supposed to fill the blanks with the best form of the verb. Feedback: One of the students will be chosen as the teacher and asks his/her classmates the correct answers. In case the answer is right, the teacher will show a Green Card, otherwise, the red card will be up.

Semi-Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Students will be asked to stand up, go round the class, find a new partner, and listen to her/his routine activities. Then, they will pair up with their previous partner, and report them their first partner's daily routine. Monitoring will be done through the whole procedure. A delayed correction will be done. The teacher will write some of the students' sentences on the board.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The students will be put into different groups according to the colors or other methods which may come up during the session. - Students are supposed to talk about one of their family members' daily routines. - Later they will decide who has the busiest family members. ICQ: Are you going to talk about yourself or your family? ( Family ) Monitoring will be done through the whole procedure. A delayed correction will be done by the teacher via note-taking.
