Description

In this lesson students will express their opinion and use linker during a discussion.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide an accuracy speaking practice through a discussion in the context of the opposite sex

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of linking words in the context of the battle of the sexes

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher writes Men are from Mars and women are from Venus on the white board and divides the white board. The students work in groups and each group gets a part of the white board. The students brainstorm their ideas about the topic while the teacher monitors the process.

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Students read the text A gossip with the girs? for gist. Then they answer the following question in pairs: Do you agree with the article?

Useful Language (6-7 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Students read the text again and fill the gaps in the Reading execise with the correct words from the text. A peer check follows. Then, the teacher points out how important is to use the language when discussing.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Students discuss the following topic: Do you agree that men gossip more than women? The discussion goes as follows: Everyone has a minute to speak. If a student startles or doesn't have anything to say, other students can challenge that student and finish the minute. The student who finishes a minute gets a point. A student who manages to finish his/her own minute, gets two points. Students who are being offensive to the other students lose a point and their minute.

Feedback and Error Correction (4-6 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

During the discussion, the teacher makes notes of students mistakes. Afterwards, the teacher discusses these mistakes with the students. As a time-filler task, the teacher can play the video on YouTube Men vs Women.
