Description

In this lesson ,students will learn about the past continuous.We will be discussing about past embarrassing situations&behaviour.Also they will develop their skills of reading for gist and specific information .

Materials

Abc printed pictures
Abc Whiteboard
Abc Handout (photocopy)

Main Aims

  • to give practise in speaking about past experiences ,in particular experinces related to embarrassing experiences.

Subsidiary Aims

  • to expose students to the past continuous tense

Procedure

warmer/lead in (7-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher starts by asking the class a question: "How are you feeling today" and tells how s/he feels. Demonstrates 8-10 printed pictures of faces and ask the Ss to match this pictures with the feelings written on the whiteboard. The last pictures is an embarrased icon.

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The teacher gives a clear explanation of the word "embarrassing".Make the students repeat the word then all together. The teacher shows the student two embarrassing moment pictures and asks which one is the most embarrassing.

Pre-reading section (6-10 minutes) • to prepare students for reading text

The teacher writes some times on the board ,e.g. 8 am,1.30 pm ,7 am ,and 11.30 pm. Asks some of the students to think about what they were doing yesterday at one of these times and tells them to work in pairs.Then asks one of the Ss about his/her partner what s/he was doing doing yesterday. Pairwork: The teacher gives three pictures.The Ss interprets what is happening in each one.When all three have been discussed about which situation is the most embarrassing.

Gist Reading (9-12 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice 'main idea' reading

The teacher arranges the Ss in groups of 3.The Ss are given three messages from an internet discussion group.they read these messages and decide which one goes with wich picture.

Reading for specific information (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

The Ss are given eight question and asked to read the messages again and answer the questions and then the teacher asks the Ss to discuss their answers in groups. Check the answers with the teacher.

Speaking Practice (8-10 minutes) • To allow students an opportunity to use this language in a meaningful, real-world context.

The teacher asks the class a question: "Have you ever had any embarrassing experience?" As the students respond positively, the teacher tells them to discuss it in pairs then asks 2-3 Ss to share their embarrassing moment with the class.If they are to shy to talk about this the teacher share his/her own story to make them feel comfortable.
