Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about information overload in the context of technology and electronic devices

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of tecgnology and electronic devices
  • To enable students to review and practice the vocabulary related to technology and electronic devices

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Focus on the title of the article and the picture What do you think 'Information overload' means? Ss make predictions in pairs Open-class FB

Pre-Reading/Listening (7-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pre-teach the words: obscure, irritation, willpower Ss read the first paragraph Peer-check FB

Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Ss read the multiple-choice questions (there are 3 in the book, I would like to make it 5 or 6) Ss read the article and choose the correct answer Peer-check Provide the answer-key

Reading#2 (9-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading tasks

Ss look at the words from the text and try to work out the meaning (pairwork) Compare with other groups Check answers Ss find the problems and solutions for information overload and add some ideas of their own in small groups.

Post-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Re-arrange the pairs Ss discuss the questions: Do you suffer from information overload in your life? How does it affect different parts of your life? (your work/studies/social life/family life) Monitor and note down bad and good language Ss produce Ss correct their mistakes
