Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of "Used to" and "Usually" in the context of relationships

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about how four couples met in the context of relationships
  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of relationships, old/new habits and situations.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Remind students of the previous lesson which was about a couple and how they met. IN PAIRS- Sts talk about how a couple they know met. (ex 2a)

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Sts listen to four people talking about where they met their partner. Match them with a place from ex 1a (previous lesson's reading) (Teacher PLAYS the audio once, PAUSING after each speaker for sts to write the correct letter) In pairs- Sts compare with a partner. PLAY THE AUDIO again if necessary. CHECK ANSWERS. Sts LISTEN AGAIN and WRITE DOWN more DETAILS about how the people met. (ex 2c) PLAY THE AUDIO and PAUSE it after each speaker. Sts COMPARE their notes with a partner. ELICIT as many details as possible. ASK WHICH MEETING Sts found the most romantic.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Sts listen to speaker 4 and 5 again. Elicit two sentences from the text to use in Clarification Stage, asking "what do they say about bars and clubs?) ELICIT: We used to go to bars and clubs together on Saturday night. "what do they say about meeting people?" ELICIT: It used to be quite difficult to meet people.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Students LOOK AT THE EXTRACTS from the listening. (ex 2c) In pairs- ANSWER the questions about the form of the TL. ELICIT ANSWERS. if necessary SHOW THE ANSWERS. If time- Teacher PLAYS THE AUDIO, PAUSING after each sentence for Sts to listen and repeat after the audio. (ex 3a)

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Give the handout. (ex a) Sts complete the sentences individually. Check the answers in pairs. SHOW ANSWERS.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Teacher GIVES THE PAPERS.( ex 3b) Give Sts few minutes to choose their three topics and plan what they are going to say. IN PAIRS (A and B) - Tell the As to start talking about their first topic, giving as much information as they can. The Bs can ask for more information too. Then the Bs tell the As about their first topic. And proceed to the second and third topic. Teacher monitors and helps.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Put Sts IN PAIRS- Give out one sheet per pair. Focus on the first invention (the electric light) and ask Sts what did people use to do before it was invented? Sts continue in pairs with the other inventions. FEEDBACK. IF TIME- Give Sts some time to choose three inventions that they couldn't live without, and three that they could happily live without. Get feedback to see which were the most/least popular inventions.
