Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of Environment - Land & Sea

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of environment words in the context of Land & Sea

Procedure

Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Elicit the topic of the lesson, the environment, by playing hangman - Ask the Ss to brainstorm as many words as they can about factors of pollution - Show the list of concerns slide on the overhead projector - Make sure the Ss understand the meaning of the words by asking: are any of those words unfamiliar? - Drill the words - Check Ss understanding of the words - Ask the Ss to work in pairs to write the list on paper and rank the concerns in order of most to least - Nominate one Ss of each pair to get FB by asking them to play 'rock paper scissors' or flipping a coin

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide Ss with a chance to examine a proverb related to the general context and practice speaking

- Do the proverb as a dictogloss - Instruct the Ss to put down their pens and that they are going to listen to me reading the proverb - They then will write, in pairs, as much as they can remember from the proverb - Ss check with others and compare - Provide the Ss with the complete version of the proverb

Useful Language (6-8 minutes) • To prepare the Ss for the text in the next lesson and make it more accessible

- Provide Ss with the word search and instruct them to find as many words related to the environment as they can - Provide Answer key - Provide Ss with the 'match the words with their definitions' exercise - Give answer key - Provide the Ss with the material, the diagram - Ask the Ss to make words combinations of the words from the outer circle with the words in the inner circle - Give Ss enough time to figure them out and find as many combinations as they can - Ss check answers with their partners - Provide the Ss with answer key

Productive Task #1 (9-15 minutes) • To provide the Ss with an opportunity to practice speaking using some words and phrases related to environment

- Instruct the Ss to work in pairs and draw an outline of their country or region on a piece of paper indicating all the four directions - north, south, east, and west - Ss, in pairs, take turns to describe the natural features of the country while drawing them on the map - Together the Ss should produce an illustrated map of the country and its natural features and then compare with other pairs

Productive Task #2 (7-10 minutes) • To provide another speaking practice opportunity for the Ss to further consolidate the useful language in the previous stages

- Give 5 Ss a card each that has one word from the inner circle - Give other Ss cards that have a word or two words from the outer circle - Ask Ss to find their partners, e.g. rain forest - Ss refer back to the list of concerns that they had written in the first stage, the lead-in - Ss first suggest or add some problems to the list if any - In pairs, Ss take turns suggesting solutions for those problems - each problem should take around one minute - Monitor and help Ss if needed
