Main Aims

To provide clarification and practice of the modal verbs can/could and be able to in the context of learning new skills

Subsidiary Aims

To provide speaking practice of the target language

Procedure (34-45 minutes)

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show the picture from the beginning of unit 4. Ask Q's like: Who do you think she is? What is she doing? Do you think she is good at it?

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

Teacher shows 3 different pictures on the board. Sts are given 3 texts. They need to connect the pictures with the texts.

Highlight (7-9 minutes) • To provide clarification of the TL

In pairs sts read the text again and fill the gaps. A feedback follows

Clarification (10-13 minutes) • To clarify the target language

The teacher shows a few sentences with can/ could/ be able to in the board. Then, teacher asks CCQ's like Can I say: I was can to do this? to elicit the form of TL. Then the teacher elicits the sentence stress in the target language and drills for pronunciation.

Task (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with practice for the language

First in pairs and then in groups, Ss do the speaking activity on p 35
