A1/2 (Elementary) level

Description

In this lesson, students learn how to give and ask for directions and practice them more through some listening and speaking exercises. Students get a chance to produce the language they learned in the previous lesson.

Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of language used for giving directions in the context of shopping mall

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of direction words in the context of shopping mall
  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of shopping mall
  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about directions in the context of Mini mall

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher WRITES "SHOPPING MALL" on the board, brainstorm the names of shops that they know/words/verbs. If possible, teacher ELICITS SOME QUESTIONS, if not, teacher WRITES THE QUESTIONS ON THE BOARD. (Do you go to the shopping malls? Do you like them? What do you buy? Do you go alone? ) Students WORK IN PAIRS and ASK THE QUESTIONS.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Students COMPLETE THE DIRECTIONS with a word from the box.. CHECK IN PAIRS. Teacher SHOWS THE ANSWERS on the board. Teacher DRILLS THE SENTENCES FROM THE BOX.

Controlled Practice (6-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students READ THE SIX SENTENCES (ex 2). Then LISTEN TO THE RECORDING and COMPLETE THE SENTENCES. CHECK IN PAIRS. Teacher GIVES OUT THE AUDIO SCRIPT. Students CHECK their answers.(ex 3) Students WORK IN PAIRS and TAKE IT IN TURNS TO READ THE DIALOGUES in the audioscript.(ex4) Teacher MONITORS.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

ASK students to look at the plan of the shopping mall. ASK some questions to Familiarize them with the plan. eg, WHERE IS THIS? WHERE IS THE MEN'S CLOTHES SHOP? (ELICIT "THE INFORMATION DESK", "CAN I HELP YOU?) GIVE THE INSTRUCTIONS and DO A DEMO with one of the students. PUT STUDENTS into A and B PAIRS. Ask students to TAKE IT IN TURNS TO ROLEPLAY the situation. Teacher monitors.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

PUT STUDENTS into different A and B pairs. Students LOOK AT THE MAPS(Finding the hotel shop), TAKE IT IN TURNS, ONE ASKS FOR DIRECTIONS and the other one GIVES DIRECTIONS. Teacher MONITORS.

Flexi-stage (15-20 minutes) • To provide students with extra practice of the target language

1. Students LOOK AT THE PLAN of two floors of the shopping mall and COMPLETE THE SENTENCES. CHECK THE ANSWERS IN PAIRS. Teacher SHOWS THE ANSWERS ON BOARD. 2. Students LOOK AT THE PLAN of the shopping mall again and complete the dialogues. CHECK THE ANSWERS IN PAIRS. IF TIME, they PRACTICE THE DIALOGUES in pairs.
