Description

In this lesson, the students will talk about sports and have some, reading, listening and speaking activities. The lesson focuses on vocabulary, words and sport related phrases as well as the narrative tenses.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about Sports in the context of Cheating moments in sports
  • To provide clarification, practice and review of Sports in the context of Different types of sports and required equipment and descriptive nouns for sports personalities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about Sports in the context of An interview with a referee

Procedure

Class Profile

An adult mixed ability class with Turkish students with the ages ranging between 20-60. Mainly university students and working professionals. Students know each other well and there is a nice atmosphere during the sessions. Most of them are motivated and engaging students.

Assumptions

Sts already have an existing knowledge of sports and related terminology so the aim will be achieved as the session continues. They also have previous knowledge in the narrative tenses. Main aim is delivering and effective reading and listening activity with final speaking activity where I will be applying interaction patterns. The topic is interesting as it is sports and this will allow Sts to engage and contribute more.Prepared visual presentation will also help with staging and effective delivery.

Personal Aim

Maintaining good staging and effective delivery and providing variety of exercises in speaking in order enhance fluency and accuracy as well as maintaining a low TTT.

Timetable Fit

The lesson will start with a short lead-in video about cheating in sports which then will lead into Turkish incidents and why cheat in sports deabte. Followed by a reading and listening activity about a referee and how they deal with these kind of situations. The lesson will follow with relevant reading and listening activities with a PW/GW discussion ending.

Anticipated Problems & Solutions

P1: Listening might have new lexis that Sts are new to. S1: Check the script and elicit if needed. P2: Sports might not be as interesting as other topics for ladies. S2: Remind Sts that this for learning and for bit of a fun and use visuals for esthetics. P3: Sts might not participate as much as I expect during the final Speaking activity. S3: Express the idea of high participation and having fun prior setting the task and encourage them and pair or group accordingly so each gets an equal opportunity to contribute.

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

After an initial screen shot of the video shown, Sts will be watching a video of football players and how they cheat during a match. Later on Sts will discuss Why cheat in sports? and Is it acceptable in their country

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Sts will discuss the favourite sports in their country and will be exposed to 10 popular sports in the world and discuss what equipment are needed to play each sport. The aim is to enchance related vocabulary and phrares.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Sts will be exposed to **Famous cheating moments-Taking a short cut** reading for gist reading activity. Sts will look at the higlighted verbs and discuss in pairs the following; 1. Which verb refers to a completed action in the past? (was-finished) 2. Which verb refers to an action that happened before the past time we are talking about? (had happened, had also cheated, had taken) 3. Which verb refers to an action in progress (or not) at a particular moment in the past? (wasn't sweating)

While-Reading/Listening Part One #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Sts will be exposed to a listening activity ( Part One) about a referee and complete the multiple choice task in order to practice TL.

While Listening - Part Two (5-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice TL

Sts will be exposed to the second part of the listening activity ( Part Two) with the interview of a referee and complete the gap filling task in order to practice TL.

Speaking (Post-Listening) (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned through speaking and personalisation

Sts will pair up and tell their partner about 5 different kind of situations and express their opinions and stories about **What happened-Why-How and it happened? How did they behave? etc
