Main Aims

  • • To enable Ss to practice their reading for gist and details in the context of a magazine article about men and crying

Subsidiary Aims

  • • To give Ss an opportunity to practice their speaking in the context of a magazine article about men and crying

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show Ss a picture of a crying person and elicit some information about. Why do you think the person is crying? What happened? Split Ss into pairs and get them discuss the following questions: Do you cry easily? In what situations do you cry? Do you think crying is good for you? Why? Get feedback from some pairs.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Before Ss read, let them find out/remember the meaning of some words in a matching activity. Ss work in groups of 3. Take w/c feedback. Nominate some Ss and they draw lines on WB (ppt)

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Let's check your ideas. Have Ss read the text and choose the best titile individually. Check your ideas with your partners. W/c feedback.

While-Reading #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Ss read the article again and complete a detailed reading task in pairs. They need to decide whether the sentences are T/F and correct the false ones. Take w/c feedback. If Ss are not sure about some answers, they refer to the text again.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Split Ss into new pairs and get them discuss a few questions (ppt). All of them draw a strip of coloured paper out of a box. Ss who get the same colour will work together.
