Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of Life, countries and customs

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist, specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about Different customs in the context of British and Russian mannerism

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Sts will be exposed to a video of foreign Sts experiencing the British mannerism and customs through Trial&Error which I believe is a very appropriate lead-in. Then, Sts will be shown --Good Manners / Bad Manners / Not Important?-- picture a discuss in pairs.

Language Review (3-5 minutes) • To review of the TL in the listening in order to provide Sts an opportunity to check the use of modals.

I will be briefly eliciting and formulating the politeness levels of the following; Close the window! (Imperative-Comman)-Impolite I want you to close the window please? (Not natural) Could you close the window please? (Polite) Would you mind closing the window please? (Very polite)

Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Sts will be exposed to a listening of a British/Russian couple and complete a True/False activity accordingly. As explained in the added Language Focus stage that the TL in the listening is Would you mind? Could you? for request however the listening activity does not elicit it well. Therefore, I have added an extra stage to elicit these TL components.

Speaking Activity-(Post Listening) (5-8 minutes) • To provide a speaking opportunity to practice in TL which was learned during the listening activity.

After completing the listening task, Sts will be discuss the following; **What would people from your country do in these situations?** Sts will group in two, discuss and share their ideas with the given opportunity to practice in TL. The Dos&Donts sign will be shown on w/b as they discuss.

While-Reading #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

After the previous GW discussion Sts will have a greater understanding of the reading task. --The Good/Bad Manners-Not Important?-- Sts will read for gist in this task. Sts will only read the title of Good/Bad Manners/Not Important reading and discuss in pairs and share their ideas about the customs in their country (Turkey). The aim is to find out how our countries might have different customs and mannerism in everyday life situation.

While Reading #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide reading for detailed information

After discussion in pairs Sts will read the multiple choices questionnaire for detailed information where they will see the differences between their own country and United Kingdom and have a opportunity to compare. This stage of the lesson will also enable Sts to have ideas for the next free speaking activity.

Speaking (8-12 minutes) • To provide a final opportunity to pratice TL and review previous stages

Sts will be asked in groups the followoing; --Talk about each thing in the Good Manner? questionnnaire. Do you think it's good manners, bad manners, or not important/not necessary. Why?-- TL is I think, it depends. It's ok if.... etc.
