Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of prepositions of place in the context of describing a house.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To develop students conversational skills in the context of describing a house by correctly using prepositions of place.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Each Ss gets a picture of a house/ flat. They walk around the classroom and they describe the picture they got to the other Ss.

Clarification (7-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Teacher devides the class into groups and hands them pictures. Each picture represents a different preposition of place. The Ss have to connect the preposition with the correct picture.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss do ex 1 and then check in pairs. Then, the teacher shows the answers on the board and discusses the answers with the Ss.

Semi-controlled practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for the freer practice

Ss work on ex 2 and then check in pairs. Then, the teacher shows the answer key on the board. Ex 2 is used as an example language during the next step as well.

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

First, Ss write a short description of their homes. Then they walk around the classroom describing their homes to the other Ss, using the description they wrote to help themselves and offering their home to the other Ss. At the end of the lesson the teacher asks who is getting the other ones' house.

Time filler (3-5 minutes) • To provide a useful practice in case the students finish the other exercises early

Ss work in pairs. They each get a paper with the beginning of sentences about how they should be organized in the classroom (e.g. I sit behind....). Ss fill the information with their own names and organize they tables in the same way as in the exercise.
