Description

In this lesson, students will have the opportunity to practice listening in on phone conversations and understand functional language. Students will be able to extract functional language from business cards.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about business cards in the context of phone conversations

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for phone conversations in the context of business cards

Procedure

Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will handout pictures of his own business cards and elicit what the students can see. Then the teacher will put up Slide 1 one for students to see. Teacher will underline important language (name, phone, company, etc.) and introduce functional language in order to prepare the listening for the students.

Pre-Listening Pronunciation (5-6 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity pronounce email addresses.

T will introduce email vocabulary and symbols. Teacher will model and drill.

Listening for gist (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening.

Teacher will write on the white board. "How many Speakers?" Teacher will play track 4.16 from the text book. T will have the Slide 2 on. FB: Conversation 1, 3 speakers Conversation 2, 2 speakers

While-Listening #1 (15-18 minutes) • To provide students with specific information listening tasks

Teacher will handout WS 1 to students. Teacher will show slide 2. Teacher will model the questions and provide clarification if needed. Teacher will play listening 4.16. FB: T will handout Answer Key 1 (business cards), students will check their answers in pairs. Teacher will show Slide 3 and 4, WC feedback

Phone Conversation Roleplay (20-25 minutes) • To provide students with the opportunity to use functional language.

Teacher will divide the class into pairs (A, B, A, ...etc.). Teacher will ask each student to write down their partner's phone number. Teacher will hand out WS 2a and 2b. Teacher will give instructions to the students. The teacher will demonstrate with the students. ICQs Who will you call? Your partner. How many questions? Four. Where will you write the questions? On the WS. What will you do when you finish? or When you finish? Come back into class. Students switch roles and WS with each other and repeat.
