Description

In this lesson, students learn about dates. Students are going to practice the ordinal numbers, months and seasons as a lead in activity. Then the students read a facebook message and put the messages in an order. Students match the words and phrases to their meaning. Then students do listening activity and complete Lily's flight details. Teacher gives preposition activity to work in pairs. Finally students do a pairwork information gap activity. Students ask and answer the questions to fill eachothers flight informations.

Main Aims

  • • To provide gist reading practice using a text about facebook messages in the context of plans and arrangements.

Subsidiary Aims

  • • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context ofmissing boarding card information.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher shows the students the powerpoint she has prepared. Teacher shows a birthday cake picture and asks the students to talk with their partners the following questions Teacher asks about their birthday which -month? -day? -year? season? While students are talking about these questions, the students practice the ordinal numbers, seasons, months, days etc. Teacher first gives instructions to the students. Teacher gives handouts to the students. They listen and check the dates. Students checks their answers in their group.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Before teacher starts the activity, teacher puts the students in a group of 3. Teacher gives instructions to the students. Then teacher gives them the reading text in small pieces and the students start numbering them in the correct order. Teacher monitors the students during the activity.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Teacher asks questions to the WC. Why does Lily get in touch with Ben? What are they planning to do? Teacher gives some time to the students to discuss these questions with their pairs. Teacher gives instructions to the students first. Teacher gives handouts to the students. Teacher asks students to walk around the class and find the correct words and phrases with their meaning. When students finishes writing their answers they first check with their pairs.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Teacher asks the students to complete Lily's flight details. Teacher shows and explains the parts they need to fill in. Then teacher asks ICQ questions like; Are you going to write the date of departure? YES Are you going to write the date of arrival? YES Are you going to write the Hotel name? YES After teacher gives the worksheets to the students, teacher plays the audio. If it's needed teacher can play it second time. When students write their answers first they check their answers with the pairs.

Feedback • To enable students to see to what extent they have understood the task.
Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Teacher gives the handouts to the students to look at the missing information on boarding card. Teacher asks students to complete boarding card by asking and ansering the questions.

Feedback • To enable students to see to what extent they have understood the task.
Error Correction (2-3 minutes) • To enable students to see to what extent they have understood the task.

Teacher writes some of the sentences on the board and checks the mistakes they did during her observation and monitoring.
