Main Aims

  • To enable Ss to practice functional language 'the date' in the context of listening to people taking special dates

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give Ss an opprtunity to practice their listening for gist in the context of a text about special days.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Write 'a day off' on WB (on the top) Get Ss think of 4 questions and discuss them in pairs. What do you do on a day off? Where do you go? Who do you go with? How do you feel? Get feedback from some pairs.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Have Ss say 12 months. Demo the material (h/o 1) and listen to 5 months. Elicit the main stresses in each word and mark them with squares (ppt 2). Ss listen to the other months and put them in the correct columns. Ss check the stresses in groups of 3 Ss come to WB and draw squares on the stressed syllables (2, 3 for each group). Drill all 12 words chorally and individually, if needed. Get Ss talk in pairs about their favourite months and explain the reasons.

Highlighting (8-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Show Ss pictures (ppt 3) and elicit the names of special days. Ss listen to 4 speakers and match them with the pictures. Ss check their ideas in pairs. W/c feedback. Ask Ss what months these special days are. If they struggle to say, listen to the recording again. Have Ss work in groups of 3 and talk about the special days mentioned above. Do you have these days in your country? Do people work on these days? What do they do? Get feedback from some groups.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Elicit the dates of 4 special days and write them on WB. 15th May, the fifteenth of May 31st December, the thirty first of December 8th March, the eighth of March 1st May, the first of May

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Flashcards Ss draw 2 cards and say tell the date. or say the dates in pairs ex 1 p 45

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss write 5 important for them dates on a piece of paper. Ss use the prompts and work in pairs.

Feedback and Error Correction To provide feedback on students' production and use of language (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Put some of the errors on WB and elicit correction and reformulation, good phrases/praise Ss.
