Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, practice and review of adjectives to describe physical appearance in the context of tour group

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a dialogue where a woman describes people's appearance to a person who works in a tour company
  • To provide accuracy on position of adjectives in the sentence through a pairwork discussion

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Stick two magazine pictures of man and woman on the w/b Ss tell about them Write on w/b how many descriptive words they know Follow-up activity: Give each pair of Ss a picture Ss describe the picture in pairs

Highlighting (7-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Stick pictures on the walls Give Ss a set of sentences describing peoples appearance Ss match the sentences and pictures Monitor Ss After Ss have finished, give Ss a HO2 Ss work in pairs to put words in the right category While Ss are on the task stick pictures of people on the board (middle-aged, medium - height), (slim, thin) (ugly, average looking, pretty, attractive, handsome, beautiful) Check the answers with the class Nominated Ss go to the board and stick the correct word next to the picture

Clarification (7-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Clarify the meaning of vocabulary using pictures on the w/b Draw a cline to show difference between the following words (ugly, average-looking, pretty, attractive, handsome, beautiful), show the picture for the word (fair) Point out that the words (ugly,fat and thin) have negative connotations and are very rude Elicit synonyms from W/C (e.g - overweight, slim, not a good-looking) Put positive adj for men and women together. Ss work in pairs to discuss which are used for women(beautiful,attractive, good looking and pretty) and for men( handsome, good-looking and attractive) Drill the pronunciation of the words and sentences. He's - /hiːz/ - use finger technique

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss work in pairs to make adjective-noun phrases (HO3) Peer check /Get FB from W/C Ss circle the correct rule Peer check /Get FB from W/C (clarify the rule if necessary) Ss think of a famous person for each category and write their names in the circle (HO4) Peer check/ Get FB from W/C Ss work in pairs. Take turns to say names and guess categories.

Pre-Reading/Listening (2-4 minutes) • To prepare students for the listening and make it accessible

Ss describe the man in the picture in pairs Elicit descriptive adjectives from W/C

Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

Ss listen to the dialogue and answer the questions Peer check / Get FB from W/C

Listening #2 (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

Before listening Ss work in pairs to describe 4 people in the picture. Ss listen again and match the people to the pictures Peer check/ Get FB from W/C

Post-Listening (3-5 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss play a guessing game 'Who is it?' in small groups
