Description

In this lesson, students practise the simple past tense through guided discovery based on a reading text about The Marathon des Sables. The lesson starts with a discussion about sports. This is followed by a reading where students read and answer different types of questions. Finally, there is a free practice via making their own sentences by using the target vocabulary.

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of marathon experience in the context of training

Procedure

Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T introduces the topic to the class: "Everybody loves sports...Let.'s talk about all kinds of sports that you know......Well, let's talk about Olympic Sports.....Which one is the most famous? Running...... Do you know any famous runner?.........Imagine you are a marathon runner, what do you do every day?...." T elicits the sports vocabulary and especially the word "marathon"

Pre-Reading (1-2 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

How does a marathon runner feel when he'she is running? T gets ss watch a video "12 Stages of Running a Marathon"

While-Reading #1 (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ss read the text by themselves and do the exercise 1. They put the events in the correct order. T checks the answers with the WC on the board.

While-Reading #2 (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Now, Students read the text once again carefully. Then, they answer the following questions.

Post-Reading #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T writes down the vocabulary on the board and elicit the part of speech from the WC. After the clarification of the vocabulary, a student starts reading paragraph 1 out loud. The answers of the questions are revealed one by one in detail.

Post-Reading #2 (if there's extra time) (5-5 minutes) • freer practise for vocabulary

Ss choose three words from the vocabulary list on the board and make their own sentences. After making the sentences, ss do pair check and read it to the class.
