Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with a chance to read for gist and details and be exposed to new vocab.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide Ss with a chance to practice the TL through a speaking activity


Warmer + Pre-reading (7-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- First, project the slide that contains some of the English words that are currently used in Turkish - Ask the Ss how they are and proceeds by saying, "today, we're going to talk about words.' - Ask the Ss to recognize any of the words - Ask the Ss to try and define them in English - Move on to provide the Ss with the list of questions - Instruct the Ss to discuss the questions in pairs - Get Fb

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

- Provide the Ss with the reading material with the gist task attached at the bottom - Instruct the Ss to read for gist and discuss the questions with a partner - instruct the Ss to check with the whole desk - Provide answer key - After that, each desk will have 3 students - Give ex b in colored paper - 2 colors - with ex c folded to the back; - Then, instruct Ss to do ex b individually - Meanwhile, the teacher hangs the same material, but in its magnified form on the walls and windows with the answer key on the back, but make sure not to let the Ss notice the answer key - they are also in two colors - Then, instruct the Ss to go to write their answers - according to which definition they got - on the paper hung around the classroom - Instruct the Ss that each desk will compare their answers with another desk's answers that are written on the paper hung around - Ss check with the same color that they have, e.g. green checks with another desk that has green - The teacher asks if any answer was repeated on any of the paper - Instruct the Ss to flip the paper and check the answer keys

While-Reading/Listening #2 (11-13 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

- First, ask the Ss to unfold the paper to see ex c - Instruct the Ss to think what those words mean and take notes if needed - Ss give FB to the teacher and the teacher writes acceptable definitions on the board - Provide the material of possible answers with scrambled options and instruct the Ss to match each word with its meaning - Provide the answer key - Then, give the Ss the list of questions that are set for the detailed reading task - Ss take some time to answer the questions - Provide answer key and ask if Ss have any different answer

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- Provide the Ss with cut scraps from the material - Instruct the Ss to work with the whole desk and explain the word but they cannot tell the word - the others have to guess - Meanwhile, the teacher monitors and notes down errors and mistakes and also praises good language use - If time, swap the cards between the desks - Give FB on errors and mistakes
