Materials

Abc Student's Book

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about stereotypes in the context of men and women

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation and debate in the context of stereotypes

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will play an aria from Vivaldi and ask students to close their eyes while listening. Then, I will ask them to come to the W/B and write adjectives that describes the singer. The singer is a countertenor and he will sound like a female singer. This will be a good start for our topic "stereotypes"

Pre-Reading (10-15 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will write on the board 3 sentences; 1. Where are my socks?! I can't see them anywhere. 2. You just relax. I'll organize the summer holidays this year. 3. That wasn't a goal! He was definitely offside. and I will ask students " who would probably say each sentence?", "A man to a woman, or a woman to a man? I will ask them to work in pairs. After all of the above is finished, I will put them in groups and will ask them to come up with one stereotype.

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Again in pairs, I will ask them to answer 4 questions on page 28 of the course book. Then I will give each person a text A and B so again in pairs A's will explain to B's what their text is about and vice versa.

While-Reading #2 (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Now, to make sure that they go in details, I will ask the Ss to answer the four questions in exercise b. After finishing this task I will ask them to find the definitions of the highlighted words and phrases in both texts.

Post-Reading Activity (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Here, I will put them in to two groups and we will play a game called Family Feud. I will ask one team to tell us what they think of when they hear the word " Taxi Driver" If they guess the correct words from the survey I conducted, they will points. The same will apply for the second team as well. Their word will be "Scientist" The team with the most points will win.
