Description

This will be an integrated skills lesson in the context of common errors and mistakes with regard to English. This is a continuation of the previous lesson where Ss were introduced to common phrases and words used to fix mistakes. Ss will practice listening to other esl learners for specific and detailed information. Afterwards Ss will have a chance to practice speaking about their own errors

Main Aims

  • To provide specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about mistakes and errors in the context of esl learners

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of making mistakes

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show Ss slide 1, "What do you think are common mistakes when learning English?" p-p, Take FB

Pre-Listening (7-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Show Ss slide 2, "What is the difference between errors and mistakes?" Peer-peer, Take FB. Give the class Pre-listening h/o. Take group FB to clarify the difference and see who was correct. Next slide, "What kind of mistakes & errors are there in language?"; categorize errors/mistakes made from the lead in FB; Grammar, pronuciation, vocabulary

While-Listening #1 (10-11 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging specific information listening tasks

Show Ss pictures of the speakers. Predict what they will have problems with. Peer-peer. Tell Ss they will listen to esl learners talk about their mistakes and errors. Explain they must write a, b, or c for which type of mistake they are speaking about. Post answers on different walls, Ss walk and find answers.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Explain to Ss directions of Ex 2. Ss must now mark which student has this problem in particular, 1-6 Ss listen again for listening exercise 2 Take FB wright on the board.

Post-Listening, Language focus (5-6 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned about errors and identify errors

Show Ss slide of Language Focus. Explain they must find the errors and write what type of error they are. Ss receive Hand Out 2, peer-peer, Take FB, show answers Explain to Ss they must match with phrases from Listening 2 Take FB for answers, show answers if short on time

Post-Listening Speaking Activity (6-7 minutes) • To provide students with an opportunity to practice fluency in speaking about their own mistakes in English after listening to others.

Explain to Ss that they will reflect on their own english skills. Explain to Ss they will write a list of their own. Show slide. Give them time to think and write on the back of their papers. Allow 2-3 minutes. peer-peer, Try to find someone with the same mistakes or errors as you, and Take FB.
