The main of this lesson is reading for gist and detailed information, in additions to two sub aims; listening and writing

Main Aims

  • To provide practice in reading for gist and specific information in the context of reading a text about a friend.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Writing - To provide an oppurtunity to practice the target languge

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To generate interest in the theme of the lesson

T shows a picture on the board of his friend. T asks students to guess who he is. T asks students to guess his name, age, job. T give feedback and asks students to work in pairs and tell their friend's name and age.

Pre-teach vocabulary (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with prior knowledge of the word and the concept to which it relates.

T aks students to do a matching activity. T asks students to check their answers in pairs. T display the words on the board, discuss them and give examples on the most important ones.

Reading for gist (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading task

T asks students to read the text and match paragraphs (a-d) with pictures (1-4). T asks students to compare their answers in Paris. T nominate students to give the answers.

Reading for detailed information (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging specific information reading tasks

T asks students to read the text again and do exercise 3. T asks students to check with a partner. T gives whole class feedback.

Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening task

Students are going t listen to the script of the text and write who the speaker is. T asks students to listen and do exercise 4. T asks students to compare their answers in pairs. T give feedback.

Follow up activivty (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T shows students an example of a written text on the board. T gives the activity to students and asks them to read it only. T reads the example on the board and tell students exactly what to do. T gives students 5 minutes and monitor them. T gives help when needed only. After they finish, T chooses one student and write his/her answer on the board. (If time) T reads all students' writings and comment on them
