Description

In this lesson, students are lead through a reading lesson where they have the opportunity to work up their receptive as well as their productive skills. They will read a text and can improve their skimming and scanning sub skills with the tasks. They also have to read for detail as they are going to have comprehension questions as well. In the final stage they have the chance to communicate and practice the language.

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed and gist reading practice using a text about quiz shows in the context of of a winner of a competition.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a group work in the context of quiz show

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T shows a short video of a famous quiz show -Ss discuss in pairs and T elicits some ideas about the video

Pre-Reading/Listening (7-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-T gives the students HO with vocabulary and definitions -Ss are expected to match them by working in pairs. -Ss group check their answers and and come to the board to match the meanings. -T could ask CCQs to make understaning clear for the challenging words -T does correction if needed. -T gives the two texts and asks them to take a look and read quickly -When they're done, Ss are supposed to match the texts to the correct headings. -T takes short WH feedback and elicits answers.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

-T asks the students to read the text again but this time Ss read for detail. -Ss will have HO with comprehension questions on it. -After they finish answering the questions, they peer check their answers -T gives the answers keys to the Ss to check.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

-T gives another HO with true false questions. -Ss are expected to read for detail again and find the specific informations -Ss check in pairs first, and then in groups their answers. -For feedback, T reflects the HO on the board and Ss come one by one to circle the correct answer. -T does correction if needed.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-T regroups the students and builds two groups -Ss sit together and they are given an HO -Ss start to ask each other questions on the HO and all the others have to push an imaginary button to answer the questions. -They could also come up with their own questions -T questions will have informations from the texts and other challenging general knowledge questions as well to turn it into a quiz show
