Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of Comparative Adejtives in the context of Quiz Show

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a Conversation while mingling in the context of Quiz Show

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I show two pictures, one about a Quiz Show, and another about a famous Quiz Show in Turkey. I ask the students about their idea about it.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I give students 6 true or false questions and ask them to read the questions. Then, I play a listening to answer the questions. Then, I ask them to check their answers in groups. After that, I give W/C feedback just to check the answers. The questions and the listening part count as the input language for further grammar.

Clarification (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I give students a handout includes some general questions related to the different forms of comparative adjectives, and ask them to answer the questions in pairs. This is a guided discovery activity about the grammar stage. Then, I elicit the answers from the class by nominating different students, and while answering, I elicit the meaning and form of the grammar. After that, I show them four marker sentences from the context with some gaps and elicit the answers from the class while eliciting pronunciation and sentence stress.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I give some controlled practice to students, one includes making comparative adjective with some simple adjectives, another includes the gap-filled practice of sentences. After some time, I ask them to check the answers in pairs, and as a feedback, I ask each question from each pair.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I give the students some pictures and ask them to compare every two pictures while mingling. They should produce their answers by using relevant adjectives and in comparative form. They can use the adjective list from the previous exercise. During mingling, I try to write some errors on a paper to write on the board as delayed feedback. If there is time, I ask them to play a quiz game with their questions.
