Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about culture shock in the context of manners

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of manners

Procedure

Lead in (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the context and generate interest in the theme

I will show the post card (projected on the board), and ask students what is happening on the pictures. I will then ask them ''What does this picture say about the British?'' and listen to some of the student's ideas. I will then ask a couple of follow up questions ''what do you think about this? Is it true that British people are very polite? Do you have any experience dealing with British people?'' Students will then get a vocab matching test which they will do in pairs. Feedback will be done on the board.

Reading for gist (5-8 minutes) • reading for gist

Students will be given the text. The title of the article will be omitted (for a later task). Students will have 5 minutes to read it and do the exercise in groups (tick the sentence which says what the article is about). For the feebback, I will ask each group to give their answer and ask them to justify it. Then, I will give the correct answer.

Reading for detail (15-20 minutes) • to help students gain a deeper understanding of the text

Students will read the text again. In pairs, they will then do the T or F task (and correct the wrong answers). Students who have finished will come to the board to write their answers. For feedback, I will nominate students to correct the F answers. For the next exercise (filling in the gaps), students will hide their texts. They will work in pairs. Feedback will be done on the board. Finally, students will be asked to change their groups. They will then be asked to find a suitable title for the text. I will listen to each group, and give them the correct title.

Post reading (10-15 minutes) • speaking (sub aim of the lesson)

Students will receive a hand out with a few questions to discuss. I will then ask a few students to give me their opinions on these questions They will receive another hand out, and will be asked (in groups this time) to discuss it. If time allows,I will ask feedback from each group. If there is more time, I will ask students to discuss in their groups : ''what things are rude in Turkey?'' and ''have you ever experienced a similar culture shock?'' (Q will be written on the board)
