UNREAL CONDITIONALS, GRAMMAR AND LISTENING

Materials

No materials added to this plan yet.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of unreal conditionals in the context of story about travelers in the Amazon who faced serious problems

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice about how events unfolded in the story and reflect using unreal conditionals

Procedure

Lead in (3-4 minutes) • Prepare students for the reading and use of conditionals

I will immediately put the students into groups of four and space them throughout the room for easier monitoring. After chesting and indicating the first task, students will then receive the handout and discuss the first two questions in their groups for 2 minutes. A brief whole class feedback will follow.

Pre-Listening (read and discuss) (5-6 minutes) • To set the context for the listening and introduce them to the target language through 4th/5th questions

Individually, students will read the introduction then in groups they will discuss the five questions, the last two of which prompt conditional responses.

Listening (20-21 minutes) • Students will listen to the conclusion of the story and reflect on the situation using conditionals

This is a 6-part listening series with accompanying questions. Each part will be played twice and they will answer the questions in groups of 3 or 4.

Unreal conditionals preview (3-4 minutes) • Further profile the target language through a set of simple either/or questions.

Students will receive the grammar questions and work on them individually then peer check. Answers will be covered on the board via slides.

Grammar presentation (5-6 minutes) • Students will learn to identify and use unreal conditionals (second/third conditionals)

On Google Slides I will show students some examples of the two forms. From this information and the worksheet we will have reviewed, I will challenge them to formulate rules in their groups. After three minutes, groups will share what they came up with and I will then show the rules on the next slide.

Further Practice (6-8 minutes) • Practice and analyze unreal conditionals

Students will work in pairs and complete another set of basic exercises, followed by a more challenging set if time permits.
