Description

In this lesson the students will revise vocabulary related to family members. They will read a text about a young man who still lives with his family and discuss whether this is acceptable in their own culrure.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To give Ss practice in reading for gist, specific information and detail in the context of adults living at home

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice and review of present simple tense in the context of family

Procedure

Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To get Ss interested in the topic

Teacher shows a picture of his/ her family on the board and explains things like his/her parents names, his/her siblings names. It's important to say whether the youngest family members still live with their parents. Then the teacher asks the Ss questions like: 1. Who are your family members (mom, dad etc)? What are their names? 2. How old are they? 3. Do they live with their parents?

Pre-Reading (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The teacher shows the picture from the text on p. 26. In pairs the students answer the following questions: - How old do you think this man is? - Do you think he has a good job? - Do you think he lives with his family?

Reading for gist (10-11 minutes) • To get students familiar with the text

Teacher divides the students into 3 groups and hands them out 3 different parts of the text. Ss read the text and then share what happened in their part of the text. The, the teacher divides the class into new 3 groups which answer the following questions as the teacher monitors: - Is the mother happy that Andy lives with his parents? Why/ why not? - Is the father happy that Andy lives with his parents? Why/ why not? - Is Andy happy he lives with his parents? Why/ why not?

Reading for specific information (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more detailed reading task while practising present simple tense.

Teacher hands out the questions and gives the Ss few minutes to read them. Then, the teacher hands out the text. Ss read it for a few minutes, then they answer the questions alone. A peer check follows. Finally, the teacher shows the answers on the board.

Post-Reading (8-9 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The teacher divides the Ss in groups of 3 and asks them to discuss the following questions: 1. Do you think it's good that Andy lives with his parents? 2. When do children leave their homes in Turkey? 3. How old are people when they get married in Turkey? 4. Do you know anyone like Andy? After a few minutes, teacher changes the groups and asks Ss to give their feedback to their new group.

Language feedback (3-5 minutes) • To point out some common mistakes made during the lesson

The teacher explains some of the common mistakes he/she noticed while monitoring.
